This is one of a handful of anime that literally had me in tears from laughing so hard. It’s like if Ed, Edd, and Eddy was an anime.
I’m really surprised that I completely forgot about one of my favorite anime openings for the contest. It might not have made the top ten, but it would definitely deserve to be mentioned.
So…. bonus round. Whoever can guess it will get a COLOR chibi drawing.
HINT#1 - It’s a comedy.
HINT#2 - School life.
HINT#3 - Triplets.
That was pretty fun. Really fun. I-don’t-even-care-that-I-lost-followers kind of fun. I needed that, so thanks everyone.
Anyone who won, please send me a link on deviant art or tumblr with a reference for what character you want a chibi of. I’ll do a traditional stream on Friday and draw them all, and maybe I’ll try and make it a tutorial (of sorts).
Okay, here are the final results, and I’m going to write short descriptions of why they’re my top ten in case any of you are looking for good anime to watch.
Great Teacher Onizuka - Winner: dead-carl
This anime might put off a lot of people, because it’s old school. The style is pretty dated, but if you’re looking for something that’s funny and has a good story, this is a keeper. A former biker gang leader becomes a teacher, and becomes the homeroom teacher for a class that is infamous for destroying, humiliating, and terrorizing teachers. It’s great to watch him slowly win them over by doing stupid shit and his personality is really infectious. The openings are some of my favorites because they’re artistically interesting, meaning they aren’t your average montage-type opening. You can watch the two openings here and here.
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei - Winner: punyhoomans
Oh god, what can I say about this? It’s a dark comedy about an incredibly negative teacher and a bunch of crazy students. It’s dialogue-heavy, but you might like it if you like Bakemonogatari. The openings are twisted and have really good music, and I’m a sucker for openings sung by the cast. There are a few of them, but my favorite might be the first one.
R.O.D. the TV - Winner: alphaotaku
One of my top five anime of all time. The opening has a James Bond feel to it, the story is great, and the characters are awesome. I can’t recommend this one enough.
Nichijou - Winner: inuriansbloggery
Probably one of my top comedy anime. I think that Azumanga Daioh paved the way for the quirky style of humor that you see in a lot of comedies now, but Nichijou is damn near perfecting it. The openings are great songs, and the more of the show you watch, the more you’ll understand what’s going on in the opening sequences. Both of them are great. OP one and OP two.
Ergo Proxy - Winner: kyderart
I’ll be honest, I’ve only seen half of this anime. I’ve been meaning to finish it forever, but what I saw was really good. I think if you like Ghost in the Shell, you’d like this one. The opening is really interesting and dramatic.
Hyouka - Winner: rabidclone
I think the K-on people made this one, and the visuals show it. The opening sequence and backgrounds are gorgeous. The anime is a school life/mystery, but the female lead is DAMN adorable.
Last Exile - Winner: youvefoundzee
Not much to say about this one. The anime is a little slow sometimes, but it has an interesting plot and characters. The opening is really wistful and soothing, I think.
Pani Poni Dash - Winner: hakowako
Remember what I said about Azumanga Daioh? If Nichijou perfected the quirky/insane humor, PPD pushes it to extremes. Child genius becomes a high school teacher. Insanity ensues, and all of the openings show it well, but here’s my favorite.
Stein’s:Gate - Winner: balksy
Time travel. Sort of. I love this anime, because it starts out light-hearted and eventually delves into a plot where the main character frantically tries to fix everything that was messed up. LOVE the opening song and visual style.
Watamote - Winner: askbandaid
Most of you probably know this one. Antisocial girl + worst luck ever. It’s almost painful to watch, but it’s sooooo good, and the last episodes make it worth it. The opening…. well, just watch it.
Extra: Puella Madoka Magica - Winner: qima
I completely forgot about this anime when making the list. It might not have made the top ten, but I probably would have considered it. I’m sure nobody needs me to tell them about it.
Extra: SoulTaker - Winner: kimmikammi
I’m giving this person one because I don’t think anyone even knows about this anime, but it was almost on the list. The visual style is pretty unique with a stained glass feel to it.
I actually narrowed everything down to 21 before I figured out the top ten. Here are the eleven that almost made the list.
Serial Experiments Lain, Angel Beats, Carnival Phantasm, Baccano, Ghost in the Shell, Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, Soul Taker, Highschool of the Dead, Hare + Guu, Pumpkin Scissors, Silver Spoon
Thanks for playing everyone!
